AI Mode Is Eating 'No-Click' Searches — Here's How to Track Your Share of It

For years we told clients a simple story: if the click rate drops, something's wrong. Then AI Overviews and AI Mode arrived, and that story stopped being true. Clicks can drop while you're winning. Or clicks can hold steady while a competitor silently owns the answer in the box above your link.

The phrase "no-click search" gets treated like a single bad thing. It isn't. It's two very different things, and you're only losing on one of them.

Half one: the user got the answer from you, without a click. Your content appeared in the AI Overview or AI Mode answer. The user read it, got what they needed, and left satisfied. No click, but you captured the demand. This is a win your old dashboard records as a loss.

Half two: the user got the answer from someone else. The overview pulled from a competitor. Your link sat below it, never seen, never clicked. No click, and you lost. This is the loss hiding inside the same number.

If you're only looking at click-through rate, you can't tell those apart. That's the whole problem.

What you need to track instead

Drop the idea of a single "zero-click" metric. Track three things:

  • Overview presence per query. For your fifty most important commercial queries, log whether AI Overviews appeared and whose domain supplied the answer. Do it weekly; overviews are more volatile than rankings.
  • Source attribution within the overview. Did you get named, linked, or just summarized? Being named as the source of the answer is the closest thing to a position-one that AI search has.
  • Separate AI Mode from classic results. They behave differently and reward different things. Measuring them together is how you end up confused.

Why nobody was tracking this (until now)

Because it's genuinely hard. There's no GSC column that cleanly says "you won this overview." We build this tracking by running a seeded query set through official and third-party tools on a schedule and manually reconciling the source data. It's not glamorous, but it's the only way to get signal.

What changes your number

The same levers as the rest of AI visibility, just applied to the snippet: a direct answer in the opening lines, consistent facts, and structured data. When the overview is deciding whose content to lift into the answer, it picks the page that's cleanest to quote.

So stop panicking about click-through rate and start asking the question that actually matters: when AI answers my buyers' questions, whose name is in the box? That's the metric the next quarter's decisions should ride on.

If you'd like us to set up AI visibility tracking for your business in Montreal or Vancouver — the seeded query set, the weekly source log, the whole dashboard — book a free website teardown and we'll show you what AI search is already saying about you.

Frequently Asked Questions

A no-click search is one where the user completes their intent without leaving the results page, usually because the answer is shown inline. With AI Overviews and AI Mode, the answer itself becomes the product, so attribution depends on whether your content supplied that inline answer, not on whether a link was clicked.
