Why first lines decide everything

The first line is the only line most prospects read.

Cold outreach fails in the first sentence, not the follow-up. A first line that says “I noticed your company…” is instant noise; one that references a real detail from the prospect's own site reads like a human did the work. That specificity is the difference between a reply and a delete.

Personalization is the product

Top-performing outbound teams treat research as the product, not the garnish. Prospector automates that half: scrape, then write from the actual page, not a placeholder.

Three angles, same prove-it job

A compliment praises one specific detail; an observation is a neutral insight that proves you read it; a trigger references something recent — a launch, a post, a hire.

You keep the final call

Most teams A/B test the three angles per prospect or segment, then paste the winner into Instantly, Smartlead, or Lemlist. The tool is deliberately a personalizer, not a sender.

How it works

URL in. Openers out.

Each opener stays under 28 words — the length that survives inbox previews.

Step 01 · Scrape

Paste a URL, get the research done

Prospect homepage, about page, or recent post — auto-scraped server-side in about 8 seconds. Scripts and styles are stripped; title and a 6k snippet are extracted for the model.

prospect.com/about → 8s fetch
title: "We help seed-stage PLG teams nail first-session activation" snippet: “Our onboarding playbook gets time-to-value under 2 minutes … activation-focused guides, weekly audits, and a target-account list…”
title + snippet extractedProspectorBot/1.0 UA
Step 02 · Personalize

Three openers under 28 words

The model writes three first-line variants that reference a specific detail from the scraped text: a compliment, a neutral observation, and a trigger tied to something recent. Each stays under 28 words so it survives inbox previews.

3 variants · <= 28 words each
Compliment: Loved your breakdown of PLG onboarding — the 'time-to-value < 2min' framing is sharp.
Observation: Noticed you cover PLG onboarding for seed teams — we help with that activation gap.
Trigger: Saw your latest post on PLG — quick q about how you handle first-session nudge?
Step 03 · Send

Copy, paste into your stack

Copy a single variant or all three, then paste into Instantly, Smartlead, or Lemlist. Every job is saved to history with one-click copy per user, isolated by RLS.

Before vs AfterInstantly / Smartlead ready

Before

“Hi {firstName}, I noticed your company — would love to connect about our tool.”

After (Prospector)

“Loved your PLG piece — the 'time-to-value < 2min' line is rare for seed-stage.”

Where it fits

Pipeline warm-up, link building, and partner outreach.

Sales prospecting

Personalize the first line of every cold email without burning hours on manual research per lead.

Digital PR & links

The trigger variant is an outreach opener — reference a recent post or launch to open a backlink conversation.

Partner & podcast outreach

A compliment variant referencing a specific episode or page earns a reply from busy operators.

For link building specifically, pairing a personalized opener with a resource the prospect actually needs is the core of broken link building and outreach emails that get replies. Prospector removes the tedious “read the whole site first” step so your contact time goes into the value prop, not the research.

FAQ

Cold outreach, answered.

Is scraping allowed?

We fetch public pages with ProspectorBot/1.0 UA. For JS-heavy sites, paste text manually.

Will it hallucinate?

Prompt forces "reference a SPECIFIC detail from scraped text" — no placeholders, retry if snippet empty.

What engine?

Groq-hosted open models (gpt-oss/qwen) by default. Provider key configured server-side; retry-with-fallback built in.

Do I need to sign in?

Yes — the tool lives in your logged-in dashboard. Openers and history are saved per user, RLS isolated.

Separate billing?

Yes — /prospector is a separate SaaS with own prospector_jobs table and dashboard.

Can it do more than cold email?

Yes. The same researched first line works for digital PR pitches, podcast guest pitches, and partner outreach — switch the angle to match the ask.

Does it integrate with Instantly/Smartlead?

Copy-to-clipboard today; CSV export for bulk. Direct push to Instantly, Smartlead, and Lemlist is on the roadmap.

How do I avoid it sounding robotic?

Use the observation or compliment variant over the trigger when the prospect is senior, and always edit the last sentence to make the ask yours. The openers are the raw material, not the finished email.
